It's Time to Stop Pushing Universities on Students
Trade schools, community colleges, and even no degree should be brought up for discussion
I’ve had enough of writing about anything covid, vaccine related, and I’ve decided to move on to another subject, for now. Colleges and universities. Don’t you all remembered back when you were in high school, or even earlier than that, your parents and teachers were pushing you to go to college? You wouldn’t amount to any success if you did not obtain a degree in whatever as told? That was me. I was told from my parents and my teachers that I would not live a great life if I did not get a degree in school.
That is not the case. but there are exceptions such as becoming a doctor. There are so many ways of becoming successful with either an associates degree or even no degree. I went to a community college five years ago. I didn’t know what I was doing and I was dumping my money on classes that had no relevance in what I wanted to pursue. I ended up dropping out until I figured what I wanted to do. I went back to community college three years ago and recently I ended up graduating with an associates in forensic science. I first had desire of wanting to attend to a university. Living on campus and living the dorm life, but things did not work out for me. But looking back at it, I’m really glad that I didn’t attend a four-year university.
Recently, it has come out that the supply of degrees has exceedingly outweighed the labor demand. This isn’t the first time that I’ve heard about this. People are being pressured to the extreme of attending four-year universities to get their degrees and all for what? To try to find a job that matches their degree? What are the chances of college graduates finding a job that they studied for in a time where the demand is low? Times like these makes me so glad that I did not attend a four-year university. I would’ve swamped myself in so much debt that I would probably be paying student loans for the rest of my life.
It is time for parents and teachers to start mentioning the options of attending trade schools and community colleges. When I was in high school five years ago, a teacher I had told me that trade schools were in high demand since very few people go to trade schools. And that is probably still the case today. There are several degrees people can obtain in community colleges that can earn them a good salary. Some instances, even better than a four-year degree. There also needs to be that talk of people who don’t want to go to college or trade school at all. There needs to be discussion of networking. This applies to everyone, but networking is how people become successful. There are people I know who have really good jobs that never finished college. That is because they networked. They found the right people to talk to, conversed, and they stayed connected. The most important thing about networking is the conversation. There are other ways people with no degrees can become successful in life. People can trade, become a social media influencer, and so much more. The options are endless. And this also applies to everyone.
If you’re in high school, about to graduate, or if you’re someone that is ready to go to school, ensure that you are for sure going for the right reasons. Do not go college solely on the pressure from your parents and teachers. And always remember to expand your options, work hard, motivate yourself, and never be cookie cut into thinking that there is only one path of success in life.
